    installing software for a dummy

Hey there everyone, I am COMPLETELY new to linux. I have been reading some posts online about how to install software but I am a complete newbie(idiot) and I do not understand what the directions say to do. I would like to make my kubuntu download automatic updates and I would like to install certain applications such as firefox, gaim, and thunderbird but I do not know what to do. Can anyone give me the EASIEST instructions as to how I am supposed to do that? I'm talking step by step from beginning to end? I know it might be annoying but I will be very grateful and hopefully it will only be a one time deal and I will be able to do it on my own after that. Thank you!

Welcome to Linux and to Kubuntu!

    1. Automatic Updates: You will automatically be notified in your system tray area when there are available updates to be downloaded, something very similar to Windows Update. All you have to do is to click on that icon (an open box/package icon with a "!"), enter your password, click on Fetch Updates, wait for it to finish checking what's available, and click on Apply.

    2. This is the newbie-friendliest guide I know of: https://help.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desk...e/C/index.html
This guide is also available offline. Go to the K Menu, and click on Help. The name of the guide is Kubuntu Desktop Guide. It has a short introduction to Linux and Kubuntu.

    Hope that helps a bit.

      Hi, critter200, and welcome.

Just to add another good site for finding out how to do all sorts of things Kubuntu. Have a look at this excellent guide, written by aysiu, who has got my foot out of a trap on many occasions with this:-

      http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.php

With help from that and Jucato's link you will be up and Kubunting(?) in no time.

      Cheers
