Can't Read DVD

I have 2 devices on my machine - a DVD-RW and a CD-RW (hdc and hdd respectively). I have the same problem with the DVD-RW and it is not a defective device. K3B burns properly and I can do a sudo mount and umount and see all the content. However, when I load the device with a just burned data DVD I get a blank DVD+RW icon and if I try to open it I get a malformed URL message. As I said, a:

sudo mount /dev/hdc /media/cdrom

gives me full access to the contents. All of this is for regular data DVDs. I also use K9Copy successfully to backup my video DVDs. Something is obviously misconfigured or wrong with the Kubuntu 6.06 DVD device handling on my system. Any ideas? I did do a search and this is the closest thing I've found.

I've got a couple of questions. First, both /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd seem to be listed listed in your /etc/fstab file as having the same mount point /media/cdrom0. doesn't this make it impossible to copy a CD? Second, Some drives can only write DVD-R, not DVD+R are you sure that the DVD was written properly? For example, can you read in Windows, or on another machine? Finally, did you get any kind of error message when you inserted the DVD? If so, what was it?

I just noticed that they are the same mount point - thanks for pointing it out. I'll change that.

If I do a konsole session "sudo mount /dev/hdc /media/cdrom" I can then go to the media directory and see the full content of the DVD. I can copy it back or use it right there with no problems. That indicates to me that the DVD device is working correctly and the content is recorded correctly.

When I load the DVD I get a gold coloured icon on my desktop that is labeled as a blank DVD medium. If I click on it to open I get a Malformed URL error message. If I use the System Menu - Storage Media option I get the same error message. As I said above, using sudo mount and sudo umount in a command line session works well so I'm not stuck.

Being able to use the features of KDE/Kubuntu would sure be nice though.

I can confirm this issue too. At home all is fine, but at my gf's computer it seems there is this kind of problem.

The DVD device is set to Master (via its jumper), its node is /dev/dvd which is linked to /dev/hdb which is supposed to get mounted in /media/dvd0. If I mount it via konsole I get its content, but otherwise, not even Kay (the autodetecting devices addon), not even KDE via media:/ can mount the DVD. DVD movies are being played in Kaffeine, no problem here, but also the "What to do" dialog doesn't appear too. In media:/ there is an icon for DVD-Rom and when I click on it it opens the "Open with..." dialog of KDE.

I tried changing the jumpers, I though the system gets confused somehow. No help. This happens in Kanotix too.

The DVD Device is Teac DVD Reader.

Other interesting fact, CD ROM media is read fine, no problems when CD is put in the DVD drive, but DVD's are what don't work.

I had some issues with my ubuntu machine. I have two dvd rw drives in that box. I had my fstab set up with /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd. The problem is that in most applications /dev/hdc = /dev/cdrom and /dev/hdd = /dev/dvd. So I re-edited my fstab accordingly. And for the most part, I use hdc as the cdrom drive and hdd as the dvd drive even though they're both dvd drives. Maybe making your cd drive hdc and your dvd drive hdd might help. No guarantees.

1. /dev's are fine. The issue is I suppose is system related. Either udev and hal can't recon the dvd media good or it is something completely else.

2. How do u change the /dev's for the devices. Udev gives /dev/dvd to /dev/hdd if it notices that it is DVD drive. Can't understand what you meant by "change /dev" thing...

DMA is on.

@OU812: One way to do it is to write some local udev rules. This is not trivial, but it is not too hard for someone who is familiar with Linux and used to using the command line. I suggest taking a look at this HOWTO. There is even a section giving an example with two dvd drives.

@askrieger - thanks for the link. It is doable (get the info, write your rules in a *.rules file, etc.) for me. But what I don't understand is how changing the names will fix my problem - I was trying to play dvds (an decrypted in hdc and an encrypted in hdd) in ubuntu I had some problems. I think the problem occured when I tried to play a dvd in hdc when hdd was set as the default device for that app. This seemed to happen in gxine, mplayer, and totem. But when I had fstab set up with the same naming conventions as the apps and put the dics in the expected drives, everyting was ok. Or maybe I'm just not thinking about this the right way (or maybe I made a mistake). Anyway, your article will definately come in handy since it would be nicer to have "human" names pointing to devices.
