Well, I finally did it, I tossed out my Windows and am running Kubuntu/Ubuntu (After a year I still haven't decided which I prefer) exclusively.
Here's the setup:
Sony Vaio VGC series Desktop base
Pentium D 820 Proccessor
with a Nvidia GeForce 7800 Graphics card
2GB DDR2 Mem
yadda yadda yadda
Anyways, My sound comes via the MB integrated intel-HDA card which I have devoted an unusual amount of time in attempting to get running. Everything else worked great right away. It seems that this issue is widespread through the Ubuntu Community and after installing the latest ALSA and all that jazz and following the instructions on about 30 forums I have come to this conclusion.
A) The damn sound was aweful to begin with. Any attempt to play any audio intensive games etc would cause the sound to stutter and click I never liked it anyhow, and B) think of how much easier it would be to simply install a GOOD WORKING DEDICATED PCI sound card.
Sooooo,
Long story short, Which sound card do y'all recommend that will result in MINIMAL post-hardware-installation BS? Nothing fancy, I have a 5.1 surround system that I share with the TV which I'll prolly hook to via Optical cable assuming that'll work, but I'll settle for stereo via 1/8" jack if that'll get me sound. I just want to get all my hardware up and running so I can feel that my Windows whipe is finally complete.
