    Kubuntu uses too much Ram

I'm new to the whole Linux buisness, even so i installed Kubuntu 6.06 LTS whitout much trouble
installed MP3 codec's dvd support and alot of other usefull prog's ,

the only thing is that Kubuntu uses over 480 mb ram out of my 512 even when nearly nothing is running. i don't think that's normal,

here is a screenshot of it.

i am running it on a toshiba laptop P10
    p4 3.06 Ghz
    512 mb ram
    9700 ati video card

the only problem is the ram usage
does anyone have an idea what my problem could be ?

    Hi,

Don't worry. A lot of the available ram is cached (disk cache) when unused.
    Reboot and check again.

On my system: free -m =

total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 1010 646 364 0 68 410
    -/+ buffers/cache: 166 843
    Swap: 1576 0 1576

when i reboot it and check it uses about 250 mb, but it rises slowly

i also noticed that swap is there but it doesn't use it ,0k in use 1,052,244 kb free

Re: Kubuntu uses too much Ram

        Hi,

In fact it's quite normal behaviour for a linux, as it's a memory OS compared to windows which is a file OS. So in fact your system is eating slowly all memory but managing it by itself... So for you it's full, but when you're launching a new application, it's just not using a lot more... no ?
At least, if your system is not using swap so it's good sign, for example :
Laptop with 792 MB : use all memory, 10M of swap
        X2 64bit 1GB : use 1GB, 0 swap

        Cheers
