KDE slow

Hi,

Do you know if it's normal for KDE to be far slower than windows (even with HW OpenGL enabled) ? It's really slow. Working with GTK applications is even worse. Eclipse is a nightmare compared to windows.

What are your experiences ? Is this a problem with X or with KDE / GTK ?

I am currently using KDE 3.5.3 on Kubuntu 6.06 LTS. First off, there is no way Windows could ever perform to par as the way my system is currently running. I am not using the latest and greatest hardware either. It takes 4 seconds to boot from my login screen to my KDE desktop, and then about another 10 seconds to load all my start-ups (konversation, kontact, kopete, kpilot, kweather, kwallet), and that includes typing in my kwallet passwords. Here are my sys specs:

MasTequila

• Athlon XP 2000+
• 512MB DDR
• ATI Radeon 9800
• 2x 60GB Drives - RAID0

CaboWabo

• AMD T-Bird 1.4GHz
• 256MB DDR
• NVidia Gf4 mx 440
• 20GB Drive

When I say slow, I don't mean time to boot, but how smooth and responsive the desktop is. Examples:

- In Eclipse (using the GTK-QT layer) when you move the pointer over the main menu bar, the menus lag behind it. In XP / Mac OS X this simply takes no time.

- Konqueror is very, very slow compared to IE. I'm using a 1600x1200 monitor, and when you scroll down a lengthy page you can notice how it's being rendered.

- Just dragging and moving a window in the desktop is really slow compared to XP or Mac OS X.

- Using adept to scroll up or down the list of packages is very slow.

I've a decent system (2.53Mhz, 1GB RAM, ATI 9700Pro) and the ATI OpenGL drivers installed.

This post is not to complain about the slowness of X in Linux, but just to know if other people have the same problems and what are they doing to solve them

A program may be using your resources, open ksysguard and see what is using running and using resources. Top from the shell will do the same job.

That may be, but what percentage of your resources is it using? It should be fairly small. I have NEVER seen jerky behavior and lags such as you describe, even with my laptop on battery power. I think you have a problem, but without further information, I have no idea what it is.

I don't think this is a CPU issue, but a X implementation problem (does it really rely on OpenGL hardware ?). But if you are getting the same experience with KDE as with XP I must have something wrong.

Obviously, your system resources are more than adequate to allow you to run smoothly. You are using less than 23% of your cpu cycles and you seem to have plenty of memory.

I'm led to conclude that, indeed, there is somethng wrong with either your display driver or your mouse driver. Personally I'm inclined to think that the problem is your display driver, but at this point, we cannot rule out an improperly configured mouse.

Please backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Then, try to run the command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg". Before doing so, you should try to learn the size (in pixels x pixels) of your flat panel, if that is the type of monitor you use, and the range of values of horizontal sync rate (most important) and vertical refresh rate that your monitor can use.

If the situation has not improved, read the resulting /etc/X11/xorg.conf file carefully. I recently found that after a dpkg-reconfigure, my Nvidia display processor had been misidentified as an ATI card! Obviously, the system was unable to start the xserver. Other people have had difficulty configuring "unusual" mice,

Another possible solution would be to install the "linux-restricted-modules-your-kernel-name" and the "xorg-driver-fglrx" packages. The 9800 is explicitly mentioned as being supported.

Type:

# glxinfo | grep rendering

does it say "NO"? If it does, this is more then likely your issue. It means you are using the wrong graphics cards. To fix it, follow the instructions askrieger posted:

# sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)
# sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

I am willing to bet this might be the issue, as with ATI and the wrong drivers = slowness.

No, I installed the xorg-driver-fglrx with the linux-restricted-modules. I'll try the official drivers, but I thought they were the same.

Yes, it's enabled. That was the very first thing I tried.

I'm going to give a try to the official ATI drivers.

Anyway, Dapper is the worst linux experience I have had to date: system freezes after 2-3 hours, firefox crashes, wireless needs always to be iwconfig'ured and dhclient'ed, kopete disconnects after 20-30 minutes, etc. I think I have a problem with the kernel (at least with the system freeze issue) and I'll try to compile a new version this weekend. If this affects the X performance I'll post it to this thread,

After reading what you have just said i'm beginning to think you have a ram issue. You have 1gb does kubuntu recognise the 1gb? Is it possible to remove half your ram and try diffrent modules separately? one may be faulty.
