and a microsoft wireless desktop elite keyboard
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=172282

my question is how do i get the media keys on the keybaord and the extra buttons on the mouse to work with kde? im realy only concered with the back and foward buttons for the mouse and maybe the play stop, mute, and volume control on the keybaord.

i am using kde 3.5.2 with kubuntu 6,06

Maybe this helps: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/ManyButtonsMouseHowto (at least for the mouse part).

Not too sure about the keyboard part. You probably need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the:
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
line to something else, but I'm not exactly sure what.

      Re: mouse and keyboard buttons

Last year when I looked at the keyboard question I found a Linux project on Sourceforge which was trying to map MS keyboards to Linux. Could not get it to work at the time, but a year is a long time in Linux...

      Have a look see: http://kmfl.sourceforge.net/

Personally I found Ktouch more useful.

i'm not having much luck getting the mouse buttons working.

however I did get by media keys sorted -- go to System Settings > Regional & Accesibility > Keyboard Layout > choose the most appropriate keyboard type in the dropdownlist
