    Screen resolution: can't config 1280x800

I've just upgraded to Dapper and once again there were problems. A lot, in fact. More than with Hoary but that's another story.

One of my biggest problems is something which plaged me even in Hoary. That problem is the screen resolution.

I've got a Acer Aspire 1524 which carries a NVidia GeForce FX go 5700 card. The laptop's default screen resolution is 1280x800 but unfortunately that isn't detected. To make matters worse, it isn't even available in the SystemSettings application.

So can anyone help me? Can anyone show me some xorg.conf magic that enables this PoS hardware to function properly?

I believe that I partially solved the problem. After a bit of digging, I stumbled on a couple of messages which gave the following advices:

    add
    Option          "IgnoreEDID"    "0"
to the "device" section and remove any references to the following options from the "Monitor" section: HorizSync, VertRefresh

But now I have another problem. The fonts are freaking huge! I do mean huge! They are 101DPI. But I will start another thread about this problem. Yet, if anyone knows how to change them into something more sensible like 96dpi then I'm all ears.

Hi, I had no problems on my uniwill laptop.
Has SIS chipset. I went to Screen, set Graphic card: Sis and Monitor 1: Flat Panel 1280x800.
When I saw defaults was vesa there instead of sis.
      Hope this may help.

You can change your font size in the Control Center. Keep in mind that a font size of 10 points should always appear the same physical size -- not the same pixels.

That's exactly my problem. Before installing Kubuntu 6.06 on my laptop I was running Kubuntu 5.10 and after the upgrade, the fonts became huge. As I said before, the 10pt fonts on 6.06 looked like 14pt fonts on 5.10, which is a PitA to suffer.
