    Where's my MODEM.

OK. I've read on the net that the Modem in a Dell Inspiron 3800 wasn't usable with Linux. Is this true? In KInfoCenter under PCI I find this entry "ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Modem Accelerator (rev10)". From my readings the Modem is bound to the audio controller. If Kubuntu has it listed in this list, is the modem useable? If it is, how do I check to see if it is functional? That is, is there a tool to test and configured the Modem? Thanks for any info!!

As you probably know already the Ubuntu Team maintains information about laptops on the wiki site. I was unable to find any information specific to the Inspiron 3800. I would suggest looking at http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html , and http://tuxmobil.org/dell.html Remember, (K)Ubuntu is based on Debian so information about setting up an I3800 modem for Debian might work on Kubuntu as well. One note of caution, however, Dell has the nasty habit of changing vendors on peripherals in their computers (like modems) without any notice so the information may be totally irrelevant to your computer.

Thanks! Read those. Fairly outdated now though. Things they were talking about seems to be corrected by (K)Ubuntu's lattest kernel. The only thing that is still lacking is the driver for the Modem. I did some checking myself and found a supposed Driver, but it isn't already in a package, so I'm having to learn how to build the sucker myself. Info below for anybody who wants to look themselves.
