can't get 1280x800 screen res?

I'm using the Kubuntu Dapper Drake release on an Intel MacBook Pro, using the Parallels Workstation VM solution running under OSX.
I'd like to know how to get a screen resolution of 1280x800 or even full screen (1440x900). I'm able to do this uuunder SUSE Linux just by enabling the boot loader config.
When I go to system->display I only seem to get choices of 1024x768 (default) or 1280x1024 and nothing in between.
My card is a generic VESA adapter.
I've tried all sorts of ideas with no luck. I had the same issue under the Gnome Breezy Ubuntu install (5.10).
Is there something quirky about Ubuntu?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

well... as far as I know, the MacBook Pro uses an ati card.
So you might as well install the ati fglrx drivers, as this will(should at least) give you widescreen, as well as 3d support

look on the ubuntu wiki, and search for fglrx drivers.
Remember, the wiki usually has the answers to most of the questions, and then a forum search
