Printer - Just Not Installing - Kinda Solved!?!?

I have read a few other posts on the subject. Doesn't seem too widespread but significant none the less.

OK - I'm trying to install my HP Laserjet 6L connected via parallel port. After I make my printer driver selection I get, "either printer driver does not exist or I don't have permission to install." If I continue on and find my printer listed, my printer prints out nothing but jibberish for an unknown amount of pages.

Things I've tried. I've tried rebooting the machine into single user mode (root on Kubuntu) and running there - failed. I've tried running 'systemsettings' from a konsole (sudo systemsettings) - failed. I've tried commenting out something in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf (got this on a post - I forget what it was now) - failed. I have also installed the latest updates from the pool as of 04:28 CST 05-11-2006 to no avail.

I have not tried downloading Cups directly and installing as another post suggested. This might work however, this is a problem with Kubuntu (maybe Ubuntu?) and I would think we would want to fix it within the pool before final. Right?

BTW, when I run the install from konsole, I DO get a return from stdout stating that the 'HPLJ6' driver could not be found. With that, I have checked that I have all HP driver packages installed via Synaptic. Could it be that we are missing a link calling the wrong location for these drivers? Most seem to think it's a permission problem tyring to connect to cups. I would second that as I have tried to configure the printer via Cups web interface at localhost:631 and cannot seem to authenticate either as root or user.

    Wadda we do?

I'm having the same problem right now. Downloaded and installed Flight 7, but neither my HP Laserjet 1100 or HP PSC 900 will install! Help!

Re: Printer - Just Not Installing

Grabbed some updates with cupsys and cups related packages today. The installer "found" my printer and listed it in the port list (this didn't happen before) but still no go. Cannot find the driver OR I don't have permission to load the driver. Run from a command line stdout states it cannot find the driver. Could this be? What packages should I have installed to support Cups printing for an HP Laserjet 6L?

Re: Printer - Just Not Installing - Kinda Solved!?!?

OK - so I booted into 'recovery mode', ran through the printer installation and THIS TIME, I gave it my printer .ppd file found elsewhere (I think from the Cups website?) on the internet. It now works. So, I'm left with one opinion. The system COULD NOT find the printer driver files. Now, I've never had to specifically install printer drivers for my HP Laserjet 6L before so I assume that they are (or should be) included in the installation of the distro. If they are included, then they are misplaced or the printer installation applet is looking in the wrong place. If they are not, this is something new to me.

Other people should try installing their printers using .ppd files directly and see what happens.

The ppd files are, in fact, on Kubuntu Dapper. The problem is that they aren't found by the GUI installer. So you're right to select Other rather than selecting your printer from the data list. But then you don't have to browse the Internet for the drivers, just your hard drive. Anything listed in the data list is actually on the PC. Look in /usr/share/ppd and then navigate to the printer of your choice. If not in /usr/share/ppd, it will be in some other folder on /usr/share.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem with my LaserJet 1100.

However, the solution of browsing the ppd file manually doesn't work.
I get a "Wrong driver format" alert box.

I have tried these ppd files:
            /usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP/HP-LaserJet_1100-hpijs.ppd
            /usr/share/ppd/linuxprinting.org-gs-builtin/HP/HP-LaserJet_1100-ljet4.ppd
            /usr/share/ppd/linuxprinting.org-gs-builtin/HP/HP-LaserJet_1100-lj4dith.ppd

            I'm open to suggestions.

I'm surprised that the ljet4 ppd doesn't work. Try going to linuxprinting.org . Your printer is there and you can download their ppd file (which is perhaps a more recent version) and try that. Also, be sure that you have HPLIP installed on your system (though it should have installed by default).

Finally, if the PPD file from linuxprinting doesn't work, you can also try going to http://hplip.sourceforge.net/ and downloading the self-installer for the latest HPLIP. The one by default in Edgy is a few months old. Updating it might help (of course it might not).

This web site gives info on the correct drivers to use:
                http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...HP-LaserJet_6L

and this site gives you excellent drivers for your printer:
