KMix and Intel HDA on board sound card in HP Pavilion dv2000

I have recently installed Kubuntu Dapper 6.?? onto this platform. I have had sound from the outset, but KMix shows only the onboard speakers as output and the PCM input. Microphones and headphones do not register with the system and do not appear in KMix although all the ALSA modules are loaded. If I attach a USB headset with microphone, it is recognised but even when selected all output still comes through the onboard speakers.

Does anyone have experience of this or similar problems. The soundcard is identified as Intel HDA generic.

    Thanks,
    David

I have a newer Intel HDA system on an Intel motherboard. The device is a STAC92xx chip.

Question #1 -- Dapper? I know about LTS, but the more recent versions have better hardware recognition -- at least on mine.

#2 -- here are a couple of commands that may or may not shed any light on your setup:

    Code:
    aplay -l
    Code:
    modinfo soundcore
#3 -- here's a very good guide for troubleshooting sound stuff:
