    xorg.conf keeps getting overwritten

    Hello,
I am running Kubuntu 6.10 and Ubuntu 6.10. In Ubuntu my monitor is running correctly and xvidtune -show gives "1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync but in Kubuntu whenever I try modify xorg.conf it is overwritten and I can't figure out what is doing it. The HorzSync and VertRefresh are also being overwritten. I've tried all the possibilities in the configure section on the monitor but my exact monitor isn't listed. After fighting and getting at best 1280 X 960, I upgraded xserver and I can get modeline "1280x1024@60" 108.0 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync to work for KDE . It seems also that X and kde were conflicting somehow as the system settings>monitor and display were not the same as xorg.conf after the upgrade they are jiving but the KDE screensaver doesn't come on and a big X which I presume is X screensaver does. Both Ubuntu and Kubuntu are using the nv driver for a geforce2mx400/200 card. I am thankful to at least have the resolution to 1280 X 1024, but would like the crisper resolution if I can figure it out.
    Thanks.

    Have you tried:
    Code:
    Option "UseEDID" "False"
    Links:
nvidia-glx should add [Option "UseEDID" "False"] to [Section "Device"] in xorg.conf
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...20/+bug/105957

[nvidia-glx] fails to detect modelines in Feisty and uses a low resolution unless EDID information is ignored
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s....20/+bug/94671
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Thanks for the links, Rog131. I tried Option "UseEDID" "False" but it didn't work for me. Though it is possible this solution would work, I won't know until whatever it is stops overwriting my xorg.conf. trying this actually put X and kde back into something around 1024x960 and I had to then go to the systems settings in KDE and change the configuration to regain 1280x1024. Something took out my changes to xorg.conf. ?

Yeah, kde-guidance does that... I hate kde-guidance. It's great for the people that never need to tweak anything in their configs, but it's an abomination if you do.
