    Screen Resolution at 640X400 - corrupted screen at higher

    Hi, I'm new to Kubuntu-Dapper and I've somehow managed to mess up my screen resolution.

    After a clean install my screen resolution (on a Dell 600m) was "fine" <<well..limited to 1024X768 but that's ok for me>>.

    Following installing the recomended update packages, firefox2, and some drivers to enable wireless, my screen resolution now only works at 640X400!!

    Under the system setting menu I do have to ability to increase the slider but any higher resolution corrupts the screen (the cursor becomes a fuzzy square, nothing is rendered properly...a big mess).

    I was using Ubuntu last week (my first week on Linux) and I didn't have any problems...

    oh, and my video card is ATI 9000 - it was correctly identified by Kubuntu and seemed to be working perfectly...

    sorry for the long post but its a frustrating problem!

    Thanks

    Have you tried to reconfigure your xserver?

    Just switch to a text console, pressing CTRL+ALT+F1. Give your username and password and type:

    Code:
    $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    Follow the screen prompts. If you are insecure about something, just don't touch the deault value. When you are finished, just issue the following command.

    Code:
    $ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

      thanks, that worked!

      <<$ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart>>

      did not restart KDM so I just did a manual reboot - but probably that's probably because I don't know any of the terminal commands.

      thanks

        You can restart the xserver by ctrl-alt-backspace

        You should log out first though

          Re: Screen Resolution at 640X400 - Part 2

          Help!!!

          I have made 3 installs of Kubuntu Dapper Dan- each time resulution is so high I can not read it. I used the onboard display setting to set it to a usable resolution. and it works at that point. On reboot it goes to the 600x400 resulution. When I go bact to the setup page thats the only option.

          I tried the fix above but only get part way and it hangs up.

          rebooting returns to the 600x400 resulution.

          what do I need to do to fix this or am I too dumb to use linux??

          thanks

            It looks like a bug or a hardware problem.

            Please tell use more info about your setup. When dpkg-reconfigure hangs, is there any error message?

            Javier.
