I did a resize but it is taking too long and I think it would be quicker to do a reinstall and remember to set the / partition to start at 1 Mib rather than the default.
Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

That got it working. GrubII needs more room on newer SSD drives when using BRTFS. The default for formatting BRTFS is to begin at the beginning of the disk or just after the last partition and that only allocates 1,024 sectors which is to small for the Grub file. I had to use kpartionmanger to set it to leave 1Mil of space that allowed for 2048 sectors and thus enough for the GrubII boot MBR. The Kubuntu install doesn't currently warn you about this and the partitioning tool it uses doesn't let you adjust the start so you have to use kpartionmanager to do this and tell the installer not to format root. I don't know if GParted does this but I suspect it will.
