Upgraded from Kubuntu 19.04 to 19.10 (using 'sudo apt do-release-upgrade -d' method)
After upgrade, rebooted, then ran sudo apt full-upgrade to get KDE 5.17
Rebooted again, so all is fresh. (Same system/setup as in my other thread here)
On occasion, I find that the Desktop environment becomes completely unresponsive. I can access the system via SSH from another computer on my network during these crashes, granting me access to the command line. upon running the "top" command, i usually find that some part of the desktop environment (kwin, x11, plasmashell, etc) has crashed, and is eating up as much of the CPU time as it can get, along with whatever other app was actively in use. (eg VLC, Dolphin, Java/Minecraft, etc)
so far, the only solution I've found is to pull the plug on the PC, then boot back up, but here are some other things I've tried that have all done nothing at all, or failed to help... (all as sudo on remote SSH, except the first item)
tried switching to a TTY, using ctrl-alt F4 (unresponsive!)
tried killing the offending active app (Does not kill)
tried restarting kwin_11, plasmashell, and sddm (Does nothing)
tried checking for updates via apt-get upgrade (in case an update fixed it) (Doesn't help)
tried restarting the PC using shutdown -r now (Does not restart, or restarts without resolving the symptoms)
tried installing the latest proprietary nvidia drivers, thinking it was a driver problem. (Not the cause)
tried checking integrity of all mounted drives (Fixes drive issues caused by crashing, but doesn't stop crashing)
I'm at my wits end with this one, and I also have a friend experiencing the exact same symptoms, after the same upgrade. I'm literally 2 steps away from a full reinstall, but hoping to avoid this, if the problem can be corrected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
