Speakers vs. Headphones - how to get them to work correctly?

After kubuntu 18.04 was installed my speakers worked fine, but not the headphones. When I unplug my headphones the speakers stop working.

Does kununtu handle both speakers and headphones? If so how, and where would the speakers and headphones selection be?

My Sennheiser headphones are plugged into my Creative Labs Z sound card. Does kubuntu handle sound cards?

What kernel are you using? Looks like some Creative stuff was added to 4.18

if you click the speaker icon in the system tray , then click the little switch looking thing in the top right corner of the window , you will get audio settings .

and you can go to system settings>Audio

          got it, system settings>Audio
devices: both output and input have the same setting which is for Creative Labs 'sound blaster recon3d'
the two 'built-in audio' selections are disabled.

          application: has nothing selected

advanced: has profile - off for the GP102
built-in audio profile - Digital Stereo {IEC958} Output - Analog Stereo Input
the next profile is for the - 'sound blaster recon3d' and Analog Stereo Duplex is selected
          both check boxes are unchecked

what is ironic is the fact that my mic works.
forgot to mention that my speaker setup is quad with woofer, 4.1.

Help needed, cannot get my headphones to work ...

I installed 19.04 and my speakers worked in stereo only. Surround sound does not seem possible.
I cannot get my headphones to work. But my mic works.

I have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z card. Works perfectly in Windows 7 and 10.

It seems like the problem might be with the jack assignments for the headphone output and front stereo output. Both are green.
I was looking at HDAJackRetask to show the jack assignments. I was able to select my sound card.

I am not sure I should try reassigning some jacks (I can see a system crash coming).

But if I did change any does anyone know which ones to change?

            Thanks in advance.
            kudos to kubuntu koders

I have the exact same problem. Couldn't figure it out. I could just barely make out sound was going to it but I mean it was by chance i heard it.

Went through ALSA and all other manner of supposed fixes.

Then I found someone who mention the below command that I ran in Konsole. Maybe it will work for you too.

Here is the bad part though. You have to run that each time you plug in your headphones. Not sure what that issue is. Maybe the below will get someone here their attention and know more based on this command what the issue may be.

                Code:
                alsactl restore

The only way to get the headphones to work is to plug them into the speaker out jack (black)

                        alsactl restore does nothing.

Hmmmm, must not be the same issue that I have then.

I'm still looking for a fix for my issue. If I run across anything that might help here I'll post it.

                              The secret weapons are:

                              in daemon.conf -------------------------------
                              avoid-resampling = false
                              enable-remixing = yes
                              remixing-use-all-sink-channels = yes
                              enable-lfe-remixing = yes
                              default-sample-rate = 48000
                              alternate-sample-rate = 48000
                              default-sample-channels = 6
                              default-channel-map = front-left,front-right,rear-left,rear-right,front-center,lfe

                              And using AlsaMixer correctly!
