Fingerprint reader support was on the list of features for 18.10 but apparently didn‘t make it. Does anyone know what is going to happen in this regard? Delayed until 19.04 or can one expect For this to shoe up in one of the usuaö ppas somewhat earlier?

It entirely depends on the specific device, I think. I don't know how support was to be implemented, but I do know that non-Thinkpad Lenovos still have poor support as there simply isn't much work going on by those who have been trying to create drivers for them, among other devices.
Now, if Ubuntu promoted the fprint libraries to the main archives (and it looks like they have), they still would need to support for your device in order to work.
