Touchpad settings not active when unlocking screen

I'm using the KDE touchpad settings to reverse my scrolling direction as well as make a few other configuration changes. These work fine immediately after I apply them.

When I log out and then log back in, or when I lock and unlock the screen (with some time in-between), these changes appear reverted/undone.

They're not lost entirely: when going into to the touchpad settings again, it lets me know the active settings do not match what I configured. I can then re-apply my configuration by simply clicking the Apply button.

It's unclear to me why the configuration is reverted. I did notice in xorg.log that it unloads a number of drivers when the display is asleep/locked and reloads them when you wake the system up. Perhaps that resets things?

Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening? Or how to have KDE re-apply the configuration automatically?
