cant install kubuntu

My laptop is a Sony Vaio a little more than 10 years old which WAS running Vista 64 bit with blue ray DVD now running Win 10 64 bit. I created a boot disc with burnaware using kbuntu's official website and rebooted the laptop to start installation of kubuntu. The laptop started ms-dos and gave me this message :

A;\>_ I don't have an A drive and the laptop is set to install from DVD first. that's how i installed Win 10 to replace Vista. Why am i getting ms-dos? How do i fix this?

Try Windows built-in burning software, and maybe try using a slower burn speed if that is an option.

Freeware/trialware utilities can be hit or miss, Windows' tool is at least well known and tested.
I am guesing that burnaware 's "make a boot disk"option creates a DOS boot disk and includes the files you added to it, as opposed to burning an ISO image directly.
Try the "burn ISO" option instead, this will make a proper Linux disk.


Also, if DVDs are still problematic, can you use a USB thumb drive? These are MUCH more reliable and faster than optical disks, and you only need one 2gb. It is easier to give the OS a trial run from USB as it i much faster than a DVD, so it feels more like the installed OS will before you commit to installing.

I uninstalled burnaware and used windows like you suggested. It worked. kubuntu is installing now. For all the searching i did and all the help that was no help in irc linux you had the right answer. Many thanks. If there is anything i can ever do for you let me know.

I used to be on irc quite often, less so these days. There, you are at the mercy of whoever is there (and paying attention) at the time you are.
