    Updating before upgrading

I want to upgrade to 20.04.

I don't see an option to upgrade on Discover and Muon at all and it has been like that for a long time.
Muon doesn't work at all for updating and Discover is partially working.

This is the messages I get from the system
    Attached Files

    #2
You get better error messages using apt in the terminal, so us lazy folks can easier read them, as well as copy/paste things into our own terminals and search tools

Anyway, you look to have mis-configured repo info, particularly the (mostly, these days ) useless Canonical Partner repo. The error message seems to be saying that this repo info has been set to use the release name called 'stable' which is not a component name used in Ubuntu at all. That is a Debian term, actually.
It should be "bionic" or similar.

Can you post the content of the file /etc/apt/sources.list?
it will be easier to see what may be wrong, and we should be able to show you how to edit it using the Software Sources tool.
But it may be quickly fixed by simply disabling the partner repo using the sources tool, allowing you to update.

Disabling the partner repo did not work.

So here's the file you asked for.
BTW, if I upgrade to 20.04 from a CD, will it solve the problem ?

So what are the full exact error messages when running

        sudo apt update
        And
        sudo apt full-upgrade

Your image shows an error specifically about the completely optional partner repo so disabling it would stop the message about it as it would not even be polled for updates, literally being ignored. Your file still shows it enabled. It would have a "#" at the beginning of the line.

I am hoping that the full set of messages from apt will reveal more useful info.

Ubuntu have not had the ability to upgrade from install media for quite some years now.

After your first post I disabled the repo, tried to update and when it didn't work I enabled it again. This is why it's still enabled on the file I posted.

Anyway, this is what I get from the Konsole for the sudo apt update and upgrade

The partner repo was skipped, so not the actual issue
You might want to remove that stray PPA that has not been updated since May 2019 to clear out that last 'E' error there. This repo was skipped as well, so no biggie really. All PPAs are disabled during the release-upgrade anyway, but there are no packages in it for 20.04 so it is pretty useless, and would cause errors if you re-enabled it.

The rest shows a successful update, which should allow for you to upgrade to 20.04

It means initramfs is configured to use /dev/sda2 (UUID=6f929763-4189-473a-874b-5b2b72e5e984) [this should be a swap partition] when resuming from hibernation (suspend-to disk), which is somewhat slower than suspend-to-ram, but takes no power when suspended (suspend-to-ram uses a small amount of power to keep data in ram, suspend to disk uses the swap instead of ram).

The Info messages are spewed by update-initramfs, which gets triggered on some upgrades (because the upgrade requires updating the initramfs...obviously)

@kubicle, thanks! I've never used hibernate or suspend and so that part of OP's output had me wondering.

But I still get error messages when I try to update from Discover. Muon doesn't work at all and I don't get an option to upgrade from the GUI. (BTW, I disabled the PPA that caused some of the error messages )

Should I upgrade from the Konsole anyway and maybe then these problems might somehow get solved ?

I understand that I can't upgrade from a CD but can I do a recovery for the system from there before upgrading?

The upgrade prompt sometimes does not show up for some people. The link I gave to upgrade shows how to start the gui tool manually.

Discover and muon both ate using apt to install and update packages. If you are still getting errors we need to see what they are from the terminal.

If these are the exact same errors as before I honestly don't know what is causing them.

The only thing I can suggest is to try switching from the il servers to using the Main servers and see if there is any difference. Maybe it is something specific to the local ones?

The live usb session has the same minimal cli recovery console as you already have though one can do the same tasks from the full live session via konsole.

It looks like I don't get errors anymore just warnings.
So is it okay to upgrade to 20.04 now ?
I'm gonna try to change the server later and see if it can make a difference.

The Canonical repo does not have mirrors like the Ubuntu one does, so that won't make a difference. Unless you *need* something from that Partner repo, either the now dead and useless Adobe flashplugin, or the ibm-java80-jdk, there is zero reason to keep it enabled. This is all that is in that repo for you.

Hopefully this shuts Muon/Discover's complaining down.

Okay, I disabled the partner repo and everything seems fine now.
This is what I get from the Konsole after updating/upgrading

One more question though, I'm using JDownloader 2 and as far as I can remember you need Java to run the program so I probably would have to enable the partner repo again after upgrading to 20.04.
                            What do you think ?

No the java from there is not the normal Oracle java or the openJDK you would use for that.
