[PLASMA 5] Desktop Environments, My Laptop Me

Ok to cut a long and boring story, I'm doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, so we need to consider my system specs.

    System specs

    CPU Intel core 2 duo T6600 @ 2.20 GHz

    Ram 3 GiB

    GPU (ATI Radeon HD4570 512mb)

    Info provided by kodi,

    AMD RV710 (DRM 2.50.0 / 5.0.0-32- generic, LLVM 8.0.0)

And I'm dual booting with Kali

I've got no working usb ports, I have an e-sata port which is also a usb port [emoji2]

I'm looking to make the system as fast and responsive as possible.

it's worth mentioning I use Kodi 18.5 to watch my media off my local media server ( the only add-on is the "kodi-vfs-sftp" from the repo)

What desktop environment do you think would work best for me?

I'm considering enlightenment or deepin or lxde

    Plasma, of course
I have recently run it well on Chromebooks and old Atom mini-laptop/2-in1 systems with less horsepower than this, a Minimal install is about on par with Xfce. At idle after boot with no extras running, about 500mb ram or less. Lxde/Lxqt will be lower of course.

Lubuntu 18.04 would be the way to go to maximize resources, as opposed to installing Lxde on top of Plasma.

Plasma seems to run well uses roughly 700-800 mb of ram I like the customize able side of plasma with the widgets etc and I use KDE connect alot.

Is there any other desktop environments I should be considering?

        What about these two environments.

        Enlightenment

        Or

        Pantheon

I do like mate but it just feels like I'm using a old system.

I've seen some sweet open box screenshots on Google but I prefer to use GUI configuration like the plasma settings application.

It is hard to say what you would like, so try any number of them, really.
You are in a KDE-centric place, so we may tend to have fewer suggestions

But if you are looking for lightweight, don't assume some of the new ones, like Pantheon are necessarily going to be that way, even if they are minimalist.

          So:
          Lxde/Lxqt (Lubuntu)
          Xfce 9 (Xubuntu)
          Mate
Enlightemnent (Bodhi Linux is likely the best way to check it out)

I guess I have been spoiled by KDE over the years.

And Linux is all about learning and having the freedom to do things your way.

I wonder with that in mind I wonder what can be done with lubuntu

I've been googling about customizing lubuntu and some of the stuff you can do is quality might be worth me trying too get an old system up n running.

Daft question if I like it and get lubuntu customized could I make an ISO of the installed system and use the iso to install the customized lubuntu distro.

I guess you could call it a " base install" of my distro and apps that I install by default?

No idea how well they work, I have never tried this sort of thing, surprisingly.

                  Pinguy works well thanks pal.

On a side note Ive been playing with the MATE desktop environment and I've got to say I really like it.

I've got a cupple of questions.

I've downloaded a icon set I'd like to use as default for all new users.

1: Which file does mate store the default icon set value in?

2: Where is the default icon folder?

I would also like to change the default application menu icon.

Which file do I need to replace and where is it stored?

Icons are kept in a standard place across all desktops.

                    For systtem wide use: /usr/share/icons
User installed: ~/.local/share/icons - but using the 'install from file' in System Settings will take care of that as well

As to where Mate store this sertting? I dunno, and don't care (j/k! )
There has to be a config file somewhere in your home dir, like all the rest are. Probably in ~./config but it could be in ~./local as well

                    The menu icon?
Right click on it, and select 'configure...." This is assuming Plasma. If you are talking about Mate, again, no clue.

My absolute fave was #! or "Crunchbang" which was very minimal but still got all the basics done.

As a nostalgia I popped over to this site which is kind of a "eulogy" to #! and the recommendation was Lubuntu but also LXLE ( which was last updated September 2019 ) .

                      https://www.lxle.net/index.php?x=about

#! really DID introduce me to "way down in the guts" getting things to work like the old xmms and mpd.
