Best Text to Speech system?

I'm looking for a good quality, as close to human sounding text to speech solution for my computer. So far I'm not coming up with anything that doesn't sound like a robot being tortured. Anyone got any suggestions? I mean, I've seen browser extensions so far that do a better job than what little I've found natively available in Linux. However, most of those solutions aren't around anymore either.

If it's only about the browser, the extension ChromVox for Google Chrome is pretty good. The voice Google Dutch is a normal sounding, friendly woman voice. Other languages I don't know.

Yeah, I don't use Google Chrome. I only use Firefox and Waterfox. Oh well. lol.
