I installed the PPA:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/obsproject/obs-studio/ubuntu/ bionic main
which allowed me to install Open Broadcaster Studio, version 22.0.2.
My previous attempt with OBS-Studio on my 16.04 installation on this machine, in 2016, failed due to abends. This version of OBS-Studio runs like a dream.
I've tried several screen recorders and none approaches the speed and power of OBS-Studio. Running NVidia 390.47 drivers I was able to chose NVENC as the encoder. The MP4 or mkv file is generated the instant you stop recording. Saving your capture as an mkv file you can remux it to MP4 at a rate of about 1Gb/2 seconds.
Note: OBS-Studio is not a video editor. You'll still have to use Kdenlive to do that.
