    [SOLVED] Discovery update stalls

I usually use Konsole to update/upgrade. I used it today to upgrade 6 files. At the end the updates icon on the taskbar showed 1 remaining. If the file is not for upgrading then what is it doing in the list of updates?

I tried to upgrade with Discover and got this:

This has happened before. Although the rest of the machine works the Discover page cannot be closed except by a hard re-boot.

The same thing exactly has happened on a different machine using the same version of Kubuntu.

I'd be grateful for advice on how to stop this happening in the future.
    Thanks!

Did you try to kill the application via sysguard, before doing a hard reboot?

Never heard of it. Never used it. Looked it up, not good.

If it's the cause of the problem, I have it on two PCs.

JoHubb, you can kill Discover as follows:
        Control-Alt-Esc
        (hold down all 3 keys at the same time until they give you a red "skull" mouse cursor);
then use that cursor to close Discover at the upper right "X".

To get your updates, simply do:

        sudo apt-get update
        and then after that do
        sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
(and select "Y" (yes) when promted),
        wait until it finishes,
then type Exit and hit Return.

That will work, but the current way is:

          sudo apt update
          sudo apt full-upgrade

I'm slow to change, at least I realize that. Made a note of your apt commands. Thanks, Snowhog.

Thanks very much. That worked fine. Later posting noted. I will avoid using Discover for updating in future.
