Black Login Screen with Nvidia 390.42

I have now found that the Nvidia 390.42 driver gives a black login screen. I can enter my password and the login procedure starts and the desktop is presented. I cannot now select the Wayland option in the invisible login screen.

I have done a re-installation with the latest iso and that made no difference. I have removed all reference to Nvidia in my home directory as well as references to Nvidia in the system area and re-installed Nvidia and that made no difference. The NVIDIA X Server Settings for Bionic are:

You will note that it does not give PRIME Profiles which allows the selection of an Intel video card in my case. By comparison my NVIDIA X Server Settings on 17.10 are:

The potential advantages of the NVIDIA 390.42 driver is that it is supposed to work with Wayland. I previously had this driver working but now it doesn't. My System is as follows:

Any clues as to where the problem lies?

I am now back in Australia and am using an external monitor with my Laptop. With this setup, the login screen is presented on the external monitor and the system behaviours as it should with the exception of not being able to select my Intel monitor using the NVIDIA X Server Settings.

When I have no external monitor connected, I still have the black login screen that I reported in the previous post.

I found the the package nvidia-prime was not installed on my system and when I did install it, I then got the choice of using either my Intel or Nvidia display drivers.

The Intel driver does not support HDMI, but when I connected my laptop to an external display using the VGA connection it worked. The login screen was presented on both displays and there was no black screen when no external display was connected.

So I am know satisfied that I can use Bionic to connect my Laptop to a Projector that only has a VGA input.
