I have now found that the Nvidia 390.42 driver gives a black login screen. I can enter my password and the login procedure starts and the desktop is presented. I cannot now select the Wayland option in the invisible login screen.
I have done a re-installation with the latest iso and that made no difference. I have removed all reference to Nvidia in my home directory as well as references to Nvidia in the system area and re-installed Nvidia and that made no difference. The NVIDIA X Server Settings for Bionic are:
You will note that it does not give PRIME Profiles which allows the selection of an Intel video card in my case. By comparison my NVIDIA X Server Settings on 17.10 are:
The potential advantages of the NVIDIA 390.42 driver is that it is supposed to work with Wayland. I previously had this driver working but now it doesn't. My System is as follows:
