Are you aware of the fact that you can choose to boot different kernels for the same OS?
Since, well, you don't seem to be, may I suggest you read the above posts again taking that into consideration, and believe that what I said does happen?
I mean, a distro updating an older kernel?

Really? All this and yet someone had the gall to ask me why avoid EFI?

As I also said, personally I wouldn't bother with EFI if
        a) latest Kubuntu installs didn't actively demand it. And
        b) rEFInd would work without it.

Because honestly, moving from grub2 to rEFInd is like moving from Manchester to Ibiza

This thread kind of feels like Ibiza at 2 AM

I'm sure Ibiza is a really terrific place, but I've never been there so the comparison between Ibiza, Manchester, Chicago, Bangkok, Peking, is really meaningless for some people. If someone doesn't like Grub, fine, use your own bootloader or someone else's, it's your choice. If you don't like UEFI, that's cool, don't use it. If you prefer some legacy BIOS and an MBR boot process, that's cool, too. Some people prefer to not see bootloader activity streaming down their screen, like some scene from The Matrix, and that's cool.

It's all good, and it's all Linux.
