Well, it runs, from the USB stick, but has serious screen splitting. It does seem to attempt to correct for this but is still visible.
I did go through the various options for sync configuration, but none of them stop the splitting entirely and some slow the system to unusable speeds.
This is a step up from Kubuntu 16.04 LTS 32 bit on my laptop. It would not run at all.
Progress is being made, I'm optimistic.
I'll test more when I can get another hard drive for the laptop.
