My newly installed 18.04 locks up keyboard and mouse daily

I just installed Kubuntu 18.04 on my six year old AMD rig on which I used to run KDE Neon. I seldom had system lockups but they did happen once in a while. Now, with Kubuntu installed I have a lockup, on average, once a day. Keyboard and mouse become unresponsive necessitating a hard reset. I remain impressed how linux simply restarts with none of the theatrics MS Windows is known for.

The main hardware is listed in my signature below. My keyboard is is an older KeyTronic with the DIN interface and the mouse is a MS Wheelmouse Optical with USB interface.

This is an odd problem. I am a retired IT guy with years of troubleshooting experience and yet this one doesn't make sense to me. Why would Kubuntu display this problem and not KDE Neon? I could swap out keyboard and mouse of course but my troubleshooting "senses" say they couldn't possibly be the problem since they have been reliable for so long. Has anyone else had this nuisance problem show up?

In my experience, intermittent hang UPS and hard locks cane usually be traced to a hardware issue. Start with the ram and work your way out from there. I just had an issue on my computer of where one of my two 8GB sticks went out and was causing freezing on my system. Basically, you have to start somewhere and just start ruling out one thing after another until you find the cause.

It also may not be a bad idea to plug in a different keyboard and mouse 1st before anything else to see if the problem still persists.

I agree with dequire, but just for fun do you know which version of the Nvidia driver your GT 710 is using? The Gt 710 is a decent card (I use a GT 730), so the driver version there could be important.

Your keyboard and possibly your mouse are bit long in the tooth, so there may be driver issues there, also.

The Nvidia driver version is 450.80.02 which was selected when I recently installed Kubuntu. I used 390.<something> when I was still running Neon.

The keyboard and mouse are "long in the tooth?" I know I am long in the tooth - but this hardware has been very reliable for a long time. <sigh> I know, I know. Process of elimination for hardware. It's just a pain in the butt - and the problem causes me only a one minute reboot to get back into action.

I'm surprised that Kubuntu chose the 450 driver over the 390. The 390 version is the recommended one for my GT 730, not that I know what the recommendation logic is, but technologically the GT 710 and GT 730 are not that far apart ...

Now using different keyboard/mouse.

My recollection is fuzzy, but I recall having a choice of nvidia drivers when I installed Kubuntu. I chose the 450 driver only because I thought it was the latest and greatest.

I have another rig in a small form factor with identical specs I use for living room TV viewing and it has a GT 730 running Neon and 390 driver. No lockups for a year and half using wireless keyboard and air remote.

I could certainly go back to the 390 driver, but I recall changing drivers to be a somewhat painful process.

Three days now using different keyboard and mouse, same 450 driver, and NO lockups. I'm happy. Next, I'll swap my old keyboard back in the mix.
