[SOLVED] Screen resolution has changed

Hi,

My screen resolution has changed and I cannot alter it. It's set to 1024x768, this has caused all of my icons to become very large and it looks a bit odd. I can't think of when this happened, as I haven't loaded up this PC for a few days so it's happened since the last boot, but not sure exactly when that was, and what updates were applied last time around. Graphics are Nvidia, I think it uses the G04 or G03 drivers but can't remember off of the top of my head.

Any thoughts as to why it has suddenly done this?

That happens. Usually full-screen games with Wine... but

and I cannot alter it.

That is a lot less common (in my limited experience).
What did you do to try to alter it?

Hi,

I went into system settings > Hardware > displays and monitor > displays and then under the settings there there is a "resolution" section. I remember being able to change that to 1920x1080 last time, but now it has no options to change.

I also tried this

but got to the "sudo xrandr --newmode xxxxxx" section and it said "failed to get size of gamma for output default" so I don't know where to go from here.

edit - is it possible it has messed my nvidia settings?

Possible it is.
You could try
~$ nvidia-settings
which would give you something like:

Ah, it's saying the nvidia driver is not loaded! It says nvidia could not find the registry key file!? Sounds like the driver may have been uninstalled?

Sometimes if the Nvidia driver is updated, it can leave behind stray bits of the old driver packages.

Try this command to see if anything Nvidia related is removed, and reboot.:

sudo apt autoremove

If this does not work, you might also try booting to a previous kernel from the grub menu, and see if that gets a working resolution.

I am not sure which worked...but before your message I did

ubuntu-drivers devices

ubuntu-drivers list

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

sudo apt autoremove

rebooted and hey presto...all working perfectly!
