    Laptop compatibility question

    Hi all. My dad needs to replace his laptop and he's considering getting this one (We got him an Acer last time and it worked great) and I was wondering if anyone knew of any gotchas that might exist in this laptop as far as installing Kubuntu 18.04? Or is this new enough that I'd need to do like 19.10 or something? Let me know if you know of any. Thanks.

    It's hard to say unless you can find a post on the Internet in which someone reported good results installing Ubuntu or Kubuntu or Debian or Neon on one.

    I've used Acer's since 2004, mostly in the $800- $1200 range, and they've been great for me and I checked Amazon and your price is similar to what is on Amazon. HOWEVER, a note of caution: The following review was left on Amazon:

    That laptop is at least two years old and has a history of being returned and refurbished. It looks like a "buyer beware" situation.

      lol, you linked the R8uu, but the one I showed was the r98u which actually reviews out really well on Amazon.

        It seems that a Linux install on any of the Aspire 3 A315-41 series of computers is a tough install, if even possible.

        People were reporting difficulty or impossible to install Mint on that box. That's a bad sign.

        Perhaps it would be better to find a laptop that runs Linux well rather than trying to find out if Linux will run on a specific laptop

          That thread is old, from 2018, so the 4.x kernel. , when these APUs were pretty new.
          I'd buy it for me, but I am not afraid of the possibility of a small amount of tinkering. I'd put 19.10, then upgrade to 20.04, though 18.04 now has a much newer kernel so it should support the processor/graphics better.
          The wifi card, which is arguable the most likely place for support to be poor, looks to be one that is supported in Linux, either the Intel on the Atheros model it may have



          Many of the problems mentioned in that particular AMD forum thread are not specific to AMD systems

            Yeah, my dad isn't likely to get the new laptop until the end of April, so I'll have access to 20.04 at that time, and will use that. Will see how it goes. Hopefully there shouldn't be any/many issues, and most will be easy enough to solve. I hope anyways. lol.
