Me too. Right and Left Speaker tests work but not web audio, or local files (flac, etc). I have output but no sound.

I've tried Cantata, Amarok, VLC. The same machine plays audio on Rhythmbox on Mint.

    I'd be grateful for advice.

      Fixed.

Using loudspeaker icon on panel, left click to bring up Audio Volume/Devices. All the installed sound cards - built-in or otherwise - are shown. I clicked on the triple bars on the right for each and disabled any where Mute was on.

By trial and error, I found a combination which worked and marked it default. I had to switch the jack from one sound card output to another as part of the testing. I eventually found that the output labelled 'headphones' on the Audio Volume/Devices popup could drive a pair of external speakers using the speaker-out jack on the sound card. I got sound both when listening to web broadcasts, and also when listening to local files on a WDMyCloud storage device. Cantata did not find this device, but both VLC and mpv Player did and they run .flac files perfectly. I particularly like mpv player because the range of display options, and that you can mute/switch off with right click.

This setting also drove the sound on an Apple Cinema monitor via USB but that is another story!

Hope this helps someone. At least it shows that good quality sound playback is possible in KDE. Some posters questioned this in Kubuntu 17.?

The next project is to stream the output from the WDMyCloud disk to a Sonos sound system. I suspect Sonos is not available in a Linux version though.

EDIT: Today on booting, the default sound card had been changed - how?? To get sound output, I had to reset the 'headphone' labelled card as default (see above). I hope this doesn't become a daily habit with KDE...
