According to top, the plasmashell process is using nearly 8 GB of memory in my 17.10. Is that normal?

I'd say no, but which column is nearly at 8 GB? "VIRT" or "RES"? Mine shows 4343152 for VIRT (which I presume is 4.1 GiB of "virtual" memory) and 216632 for RES (which I presume is 212 MiB of "resident" memory). The virtual figure is, well, not real, at least at the moment it is reported.
I suggest that after a fresh login, open a System Monitor (KSysGuard) window and leave it running on the system load tab. Occasionally check the memory trace; if it is gradually rising that might indicate a leak in something.Regards, John Little
