hi all ive found that ftp works well for my needs to be able to access my media from my mums house, ive got the ftp server up and running id like to make it so the ftp server supports sftp can you guys recommend any good tutorials on this?

ftp and sftp are not the same thing .. set up ssh and you will get sftp for free.

ahhh i thought they was one in the same thing, can you give me a recommendation for a good tutoral on setting up ssh

ive got the ssh server up and running i just cant access it from the internet, ive signed up for no-ip and installed and configured the update client about 4 hours ago, but it still cant connect to it, firewalls are disabled for troubleshooting this problem

Check that your doing port fowarding correctly in your router.

Assuming your Network is something like

NET -> ROUTER -> COMPTUERS

you can check https://portforward.com/router.htm for instructions based on your device.

thanks bro just checked the link i used it to fix my mesaed up port forwarding but i still cant access my ssh from the net, i dont think the dynamic dns client is working properly and it doesn't help im running a 32 bit os , may be easier to make a backup of my nfs share config and my ftp config and install a 64bit Ubuntu distro

Stop the using the external dns and use your external IP . this should help you figure out whats going on a little better.

my ssh server is on port 444 and ive correctly set port forwarding up

i think im going to install Ubuntu 17.10 64bit and start this again from scratch

Use 18.04 instead. Why use a release that will EOL this July? 18.04 will be good till April of 2023.
