Install whatever you like but your issue is not from the software its from the configuration. Expect similar issues if you do the exact setup again. getting sftp should be as easy as 1, 2, 3..

      1. setup ssh
      2. setup port fowarding in my router
      3. profit.

i feel more confident with a fresh install and it really should be running a 64bit os instead of a 32 bit, and it will also remove any obsolete packages and junk files, if i run into the same problem again i think a call to my isp is in order

Dont edit the listening address. Be sure you can connect to ssh via the machines local address , remember to restart sshd after anychanges to the sshd configuration

You should not need to make any changes in the ssh configuration itself. the only change should be to done in the router and this should foward the port from your comptuers ip at port 22 to your external ip on NOT port 22.

Most ISP's won't let the customer edit the router's configuration. You should be able to connect your PC to the Virgin hub with an ethernet cable, but does it transmit a wifi signal as well? If you add your own router you should ask them to turn off the wifi in their hub so that your router can offer it AND you can edit the wifi configuration (by browsing to the router IP address, which is usually 192.168.1.1 -- check the manual) and set port forwarding in it. THAT's why I either burn DD-WRT into my router's firmware, or I buy a router that pre-installs DD-WRT, like the Buffalo 600N that I am presently using. BTW, a good wifi router will let you transmit on both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz at the same time.
