Power options not working, Power Management not visible under Startup and Shutdown

    Hi! I have two problems:

    1. My settings under System Settings -> Power Management -> Energy Saving are being ignored. I have it set to blank the screen after two minutes, but it never does (at least not for the first many minutes of inactivity).

    2. Under System Settings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Background Services, I see no services named anything like "power management" or "display management". So they are probably not running, and I don't know how to run them.

Problem 1 started a little while ago. While exploring alternatives, I installed package xscreensaver. This turned out to conflict with the Power Management - I saw error messages when I tried to go to System Settings -> Power Management. So I uninstalled xscreensaver again. Now I get no error messages, but my power options still get ignored.

I don't know if problem 2 started before or after I installed xscreensaver.

Does anyone have advice on how I can heal my Power Management service? Thanks!

It's worth noting that my laptop does NOT go to sleep when I close the lid.
I believe the default is to sleep when the lid is closed. I explicitly disabled this from Power Management. I don't know if this means that it DOES read my Power Management settings, or if it just means that ALL Power Management, including default sleep options, are ignored.

I have to ask: How can you know that for sure? How does one know that the refrigerator light doesn’t go out when the door is closed? Hmmm.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

It keeps playing sound when the lid is closed. This suggests that it is not sleeping.

Well there you go; asked and answered.

What are the specs of you laptop? Make and model? CPU and video card/GPU?

UPDATE: Screen sleep and dimming now works again, for no obvious reason. Power Management is still absent from the Startup and Shutdown list of services, though.

Did you try purging and re-installing powermgmt-base? (or any other power management software that you've installed?)

Power Management dose not show up in the list of services at "system settings>start up and shut down>Background Services" even when it's working ,,,at least not @hear.

Thanks for the reply, Vinny! That is very useful to know.

Do you think this is a bug or a feature?

                  Do you mean like this?

                  Code:
                  sudo apt purge powermgmt-base
                  sudo apt install powermgmt-base
(I have not run the above. I want to be sure what you have in mind first.)

Question 2: How does this look on your machine (GreyGeek)? Do you have Power Management appearing in your list of background services, or is it missing, like Vinny Wright reports?
