PulseAudio issue.

    PulseAudio issue.

    Hi Folks,

    I updated Kubuntu after not using it for awhile and have lost the audio.

    I managed to upset it somehow, but have installed a fresh copy and there starts my issue.
    In the system log there are many entries involving PuleAudio, the first being:

    2/4/18 1:21 AM systemd-udevd Process '/lib/udev/snappy-app-dev add snap_pulseaudio_pulseaudio /devices/virtual/sound/timer 116:33' failed with exit code 2.

    There's another fifteen lines involving PulseAudio all with an error code 2.

    Can anyone explain what I need to do to resolve this issue?

    Thanks.

    P.S. I can use PulsAudio -D to start it, but I don't get much out of it.

    did you install a pulseaudio "snap" package ?

      Thanks for replying Vinny.

      I'm new to the Linux side of things, so I am uneducated in the way things are done and of the tools available to me.

      I'll have a look and see what I can find.

        Yes, I do have snap installed.

        When I execute the command snap list I see the following:

        Name Version Rev Developer Notes
        core 16-2.31.2 4206 canonical core
        pulseaudio 8.0.3 9 canonical -

        Any more ideas?

          How did you 'update Kubuntu'? What exactly did you do?
          Windows no longer obstructs my view.
          Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

            ok, here's what happened.

            My main computer was an iMac until it expired and was irreparable at a reasonable price.
            My 'backup' desktop computer has similar specs to the iMac and that's what I have moved to.

            Since the computer hasn't been used for some time it was only reasonable that there would be some updates. Sure enough at the bottom right a window appeared stating I have updates, so I went along with it.
            From that moment on the sound disappeared.
            Looking around I noticed there was a slightly more recent version of the OS so I installed that as well. Took awhile.
            I am currently at version: 17.10

            I noticed there was something odd about pulseaudio, so I removed it and have never been able to get it back using friendly methods.

              ok, got rid of it the right way and re-installed it the right way.

                Rebooted the computer and checked the system log to reveal the same issue: Exit Code 2.

                  pulseaudio isn't running when I start up, however, by running the command pulseaudio --start I can get it going.

                  When I go to System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio and Video, I can see under the usic tab PulseAudio Sound Server.
                  On the Audio Hardware Setup tab I can see three sound cards:
                  1 - Built-in Audio
                  2. GP104 High Definition Audio Controller, and,
                  3. QUAD-CAPTURE.

                  Doesn't matter what combination of drop-downs I choose I can't hear any sound when I click on 'Front Left' or 'Front Right'.

                  Weird! Ideas, Thoughts, etc?

                    Systemd may not be starting the pulsesudio unit at startup.

                    Systemd has a GUI, Systemd.ui. To put it into system settings install kdesktop-systemd (or something like that, I’m not at my PC right now). It will be among the apps listed when you search for systemd gui in Muon

                    The GUI will let you search for units and enable/disable, mask/unmask, etc them.

                      I wonder if the sound issue is unrelated to the error messages - these are specifically for the snap of pulseaudio, and not the system's pulseaudio. What applications are you running via snaps?

                      What shows up in System Settings in relation to audio devices? Have you tried any of the different output options there?

                        Hi Folks,

                        Solved the problem.

                        I installed a brand new version of 17.10 and for a moment I had sound, then after searching for something else the sound disappeared.

                        Tried playing an audio CD, no luck.

                        The icon on the system tray had a minus sign, so it was muted! Huh?

                        Clicked on the icon and altered the volume and voila, sound.
