    17.10 Bricked my Thinkpad

Pretty bummed. Installing 17.10 has bricked my Thinkpad.

    https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/01/...-10-lenovo-fix

Anyone else? I can't get it to boot at all.

Started up and gave me a BIOS error, took me to the BIOS where I tried to reset it to correct settings, but now it won't startup at all.
Can't follow the instructions for the fix as I can't get it to boot.

I'm thinking Arse Arse Arse would be a better codename for this release

    Help text

This enables platform support for the Intel PCH/PCU SPI controller in master mode. This controller is present in modern Intel hardware and is used to hold BIOS and other persistent settings. Using this driver it is possible to upgrade BIOS directly from Linux.

Say N here unless you know what you are doing. Overwriting the SPI flash may render the system unbootable.

To compile this driver as a module, choose M here: the module will be called intel-spi-platform.

You tried installing 17.10 with on old iso, from before the fix (Jan 11)? Are you sure that your Thinkpad is an affected model? Thinkpad laptops are not the same line as lenovo laptops, though they are from the same company. iirc they use different bios/efi

Have you checked out lenovo's user forum for this? There could be others with the same issue on your specific model (which you have not specified). Exactly where does booting fail or stop?

I installed with an original 17.10 iso in January, and yesterday was the first time I had shut the machine down since then (suspend finally worked great). When I went to start up to do some work, I first got a BIOS error screen with the date reset to 2001 or thereabouts. I reset the date and went through the rest of the settings, save and exit, then nothing. Lights are on, it shows power, battery and bluetooth lights, but nothing on the screen.
Tried swapping out the cmos battery (to two known good ones), as that was the first thing I suspected, but it made no difference. I got the BIOS error screen one more time, but it's been dead in the water since then.
Won't boot from the drive, won't boot from DVD, just won't boot. machine starts but screen remains black, so hard to do anything else to fix.

My first thought after a clock failure would be the cmos battery as well. However, the fact that you can't boot from a CDROM or USB Live stick suggests that you've had a hardware failure at the CPU or firmware level. If you are good at using a volt meter and oscilloscope then perhaps you can figure out which component is bad. More than likely a mobo replacement may be your most economical path. That, or a new box.
