Hi there, iam using this hardware:
i tried all nvidia packages from 304 to 390.

i also tried standard plasma 17.10 to 5.12.1 same issues.
Plasma shell, kwin and sddm crash all the time in no particluar order.

Right know where i type this in , the wigdet with the K menu (dont know the english name right now) dropped and firefox is maxed out. so the only chance if have now is to ALT-F2 > login > service ssdm restart to bring back my desktop.

i can't switch or open anything in my desktop.

    no information in syslog, Xorg.log,

the only thing i found was in the kernel.log:

    ksplashqml[4777]: segfault at 1000d ip 00007f5f2e8c1210 sp 00007ffcf3be14c0 error 4 in libXext.so.6.4.0[7f5f2e8b4000+11000]

it's SO annoying that those services crash all the time, i can tell .

i hope we can solve this issue, because i am sick of it. i can't do my work right now because of this. thank you.

p.s. if you have any ideas where i might find a log that give some more infos , plz let me know.

Bit of a mismatch there, I would have thought... I suppose it's only 4½ years different.

I had a much older Athlon II with nVidia on-board graphics and plasma really struggled badly. It hardly ran at all (not even completing an install without crashing) unless I selected nomodeset before installing. Shouldn't have mattered after the nVidia driver was running, but the lack of nomodeset at install seemed to irreparably screw something up, you might try that.

I would have been better to have stayed on 14.04 with that hardware. 14.04 has got another year of support, and there's quite a few people using that to avoid plasma.

        yes, clean install.

now new updates are thru and it's getting worse. now every 10 min, the desktop (plamsa) fails.
ever 10 min > service sddm restart

        and it SUCKS.

next thing, after the new updates to openoffice 5.4.5-0ubuntu0.17.10.1 app amore blocks "open file" from open office...

WTF are u guys doing right now ? time to leave K/ubuntu. the stability is crap and i am getting mad because of this.

Because you don't have a problem, does not mean there is no problem.

Anyways, so i don't expect any usefull answer to this toppic,

From where, and how, did you install Kubuntu 17.10? I don't recognize the kernel you appear to be using: Host: kid Kernel: 4.13.0-32-generic
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I'm ganging up and officially throwing the BS flag.

You appear to be picking up random updates from other than the development stream. You're welcome to do that, but you are adding to your own risk.

Since you don't seem to be doing anything important with Kubuntu, I'd suggest getting a new copy of the distro from Kubuntu, verifying the sha256sum, re-installing it. You will find that out of the box it works fine.

I too am a 16.04.3 LTS user and have been since July 2016. I've also been a Kubuntu user for about 12 years, and a Linux and BSD user for at least 8 years before then.

Like I said, you can roll your own if you want, but don't complain when it goes south. This distro, like most, is put together by teams of well skilled people - most of whom do it for the love it - and it's put together in order to work together.

                  That's the hostname, not a kernel identifier ( hostname=kid, kernelversion=4.13.0-32-generic )

I've used Kubuntu for 7 years and KDE Neon User Edition for 2.5 yrs. Neither of them gave me a moment's trouble, even running in the Alpha mode. Any problems that have appeared due to an update are usually cleaned up during the next update. This will not be the case if you didn't checksum your ISO and your installation media, or you decided to get fancy during the install and did something which was beyond your pay grade.

Show us what is in your sources.list file, as well as any other sources files.

Open a konsole and type: cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Copy and paste the output in your reply.

Also, in the konsole, type: cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d and press Enter. Show us what is in this directory, if anything, same as above, using cat and the name of the individual files there, again, if any.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
