    Hi,
    I have made a console update of Ubuntu to the latest 17.10. After the installation, I can't see any login screen and I have access to the network. With ALT+CTRL+F1, I can access a console.
    I have try the following but nothing changes :
    1. To reinstall plasma, xorg-server and sddm.
    2. Install and choose lighthdm and gdm3.
    3. Install the nvidia driver or the nouveau one (each time I remove the other one).

    Actually, I have the nouveau-video driver installed. The boot process stops with the kubuntu logo shown. Strangely, when I goes to a console (ALT+CTRL+F1), the logo stays. I look in the log file of Xorg and found some errors :
    1. Several times, it says that it fails to load the module "nvidia" (which is normal since it is not installed) but says that the module "nouveau" is loaded just after.
    2. It fails to open DRM device.
    3. /dev/dri/card0: Not such file or directory.
    4. Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section. But FBDEV creates a default one just after.
    5. AIGLX: reverting to software redering.

    I also try to boot from a USB drive with Ubuntu 17.10 (successfully used to install it on another computer), but after starting to boot, it hangs. After a while, I got the error saying that several tasks block for more than 120 seconds (kworker and plymouthd) and "Not tainted 4.10.0-19-generic #21-Ubuntu".

    I have no more idea what to try. Anymore can help me?

          The document explains how to configure the NVIDIA card with the graphical tool. But since I cannot start X and running a program, it doesn't help much. Moreover, it doesn't explain why the "simple" nouveau-video driver doesn't work while it works great just before the update.

            Kubuntu does not play well with nvidia card anymore. Nouveau isn't much better. While booting, hold down shift key till boot menu appears. Use the kernel with upstart at the end. Should boot. If not try booting with nomodeset. This is what I have to do.

                On my ancient athlon system, died last year, with an onboard nvidia chip, nomodeset on boot wasn't enough, it had to be on during the install or that install was cursed with video problems thereafter.

                  I add nomodeset toGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT but it doesn't change anything.
                  I also try to start in recovery mode, but nothing changes either. In fact, the console is "in graphic mode". I suppose something goes wrong with my X server. You find the content of the log file here under. Perhaps someone can detect something.

                      I removed the nouveau-driver and installed the nvidia-375. I also updated KUbuntu (including the xorg packages). Now, once I boot, I have an empty screen with just the X mouse pointer, but no login screen. You find below the new log file created by the X server.

In the future, please consider using a service like https://paste.kde.org/ in order to save space.
