Yeah, the semi-colon comment caught me out too.
I didn't realise the ";" was a comment in the smb.conf file. I don't actually use samba on my system and prefer using NFS wherever possible as it's native Linux and supports the permissions better than samba and is probably faster too, although it takes a bit more work to set up.
