Lost USB port

I just lost use of one of the USB ports on my new Thinkpad. It was working fine, now it doesn't work (noting I plug in is recognised).
I guess it could be hardware, but how can I check to see if it's just a software glitch? The computer has two USB ports, only one of them is functional now.

Then, unmounted and unplugged the drive, and plugged it into the non-working port

If it turns out to be hardware you can plug a 1-4 passive USB hub into your working port and get four USB sockets. Or, an active hub and get 7.
