xserver-xorg-video-ati

I gather you have Intel on board graphics and AMD graphics on a laptop? This is swictheable/hybrid graphics. It's a pain on Linux, period.
Intel/nvidia seems to work, but Intel/AMD is a problem.

Good luck.
I know HDMI out is problematic using the open source drivers. You can try updating with the oibaf ppa:

if you click the speeker icon in the system tray do you see "something" like this ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
if so , wile playing audio click the "applications tab" and drag and drop the app playing audio and drop it on the HDMI device ,,,,you should now get sound .
if you do not see a HDMI device ,,,then their is more work to do to discover why.
this ,,,,Code:pactl list sources

You may have to fiddle with different settings that you have available on your system. My Chromebook below does not have as many options as my laptop, which has many more selections, one of which put the audio to the hdmi only, but I can't recall which one. I am away from that keyboard for a while
