    external hard drive issues...help

I've transfered much of my data to an external hard drive, including all of my old backups...

It seems that moving from 17.04 to 17.10 did something to my ability to mount it (perhaps?)

    anyway...

    lsusb shows:
    Code:
    donald@sound-X:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:0821 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 5986:0672 Acer, Inc
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0438:7900 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I can see the hub, but not the drive...any ideas?

Unplug it. Check dmesg. Plug it in to the PC (not the hub). Check dmesg. Post any results.

The SATA drive I'm having problems with is a 3.5". I was able to move files to and from my laptop to the drive before I upgraded to 17.10.

I have a few other drives (and another USB bridge) I've tried to connect...here's the end of dmesg from each of them:

it seems that dmesg doesn't see the drive at all...just the 'disconnect'...

The other issue is that 'Status and Notifications' used to show any USB drive as a device attached through these hubs, but no longer does in 17.10

Yeah, it's likely dead or the USB hub port isn't supplying enough power. I would re-check the drive connections and try it on the PC not through the hub.

As far as the notifications, that is likely unrelated to this issue. Maybe 17.10 changed the way these things are notified.

yeah, the drive was definitely on its way out...

I ended up changing out the electronics with one of an identical drive, and it still didn't work. So I ended up wasting $ on a drive just to try. But by a stroke of luck, when I got home, it could be read! I then immediately moved all of its data to another drive...

It shows up as "sdb", but then disconnects:

It seems to attach correctly, before the disconnect on the last line. If you never see it in Dolphin, then something has a problem whether it's the USB connection or something fails at the drive end. If it doesn't show up in lsusb, or appear in /media, or get listed in Dolphin then yes it 's probably failing.
