I am writing this from kubuntu zesty 17.04. Following a comment in the link above, while in live mode, I downgraded ubiquity to the yakkety 16.10.14 version and the install worked fine with that. Still at plasma version 5.7.5 but the kernel is 4.9.0-11. No problems so far.

The installer for Kubuntu 17.04 is working as of today's Daily Build, if anyone is interested in trying it.
