Plasma 5.8 in 16.10 backports

When Ubuntu updates Qt version in the repos, so that 5.8 can be built, I reckon.

Ubuntu 16.10 already ships with Qt 5.6 which is sufficient for Plasma 5.8.

Once it get in the development 17.04 release, we can backport. So hopefully not too long.

Yeah, there needs to be something to be backported from. For some reason I was thinking backporting from 16.10 not to 16.10

I ran into that too! Snowhog explained that if you go to the Advanced tab and at the bottom of that page unselect the checkbox "Disable smiles with text", which enables emoticons so they will display --- for THAT message only! You have to do it for each message because of some flaw in a vBulletin mod.

That change was only made to the KFNBlue Style; none of the other Styles are affected (or shouldn't be!) by the modification. That said, due to the confusion the modification is creating here, I've undone the change I made and cleared the system cache. The behavior of smilies "should" return to their 'normal' behavior.

As you see I have emphasized what would happen, ie it removes plasma-desktop.

I did try it on a 17.04 system and it did not remove plasma-desktop but it did remove ksysguard and the default panel does not contain a system manager. So adventurous ones beware.

I don't see this on my 16.10 installation. I do see that you have the plasma-staging ppa in use. I suspect that is the reason for your situation here. That ppa isn't for general use; it's there for the developers, and including it in a production system (a system that isn't one being used by a developer to test development) is simply asking for trouble.

I only enable that repository occasionally to see if there is any progress being made. So far I haven't seen any progress recently. By having it unchecked I still get the normal updates for Yakkety and no harm is done to my installation. Hence I am playing it safe using this approach.

I don't mind testing it on my Zesty installation as this is still in very early development and problems caused by the staging-plasma repository are worth the gamble.
