no GUI after update

i am running 16.10 for a while now and recently updated. after update the boot process completes but i only now get a black screen. then i did and Atl+Ctrl+F1 and logged in then i did a startx -- and i got a message that "Could not start kdeinit5. Please check installation". so i re-installed the nvidia drivers and still the same behavior except that now the screen resolution is huge.

any ideas for me to try?

Have you tried booting to an earlier kernel?

There's really not much to go on here. Logs? Boot messages? What was updated? Etc...
