The machine was previously running Mint 18.3 KDE and MATE. I'm testing Kubuntu for when Mint drops KDE.
When I start Discover, the start page takes all available CPU, usually about 90%. Discover barely responds. When I click a category and get off the home page, CPU use goes to maybe 10%.
The issue seems to be the graphics running on the home page. How can I disable those graphics?
    Thanks,
    Howard

I would recommend not using Discover, install Muon or Synaptics - from the command line! You are also fighting a single core processor and 2GB RAM. I may be wrong, but I don't think a Thinkpad X41 has any more room for RAM. Plus KDE is going bang on that RAM and swap pretty hard, too. I have a Toshiba laptop with similar specs, except mine's a dual core. It runs LM Mate 18.2 very happily. Mate or XFCE should probably work fine on the Thinkpad. Neither are the prettiest DEs, but they can be made to look decent.

      Did Mint run Discover satisfactorily?

I have an i3 Dell laptop (integrated graphics) with 8GB RAM. I don't feel comfortable running Discover.

In any case, you should consider upgrading your Kubuntu by adding the backports ppa: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showth...l=1#post401636. There are several bug fixes (and new features) available.

After my initial experience with Discover, I used apt-get to install both Muon and Synaptics. Both function well, as do other applications such as Firefox and LibreOffice. Discover is the only issue I have noticed so far.

Actually, this X41 runs Mint 18.3 KDE very nicely, in spite of its rather limited resources.

Yes, but how does it run Discover?

Mint's software manager is mintinstall. The Discover package in Mint is a hardware identification system. I'll avoid Kubuntu's Discover.
Thanks for the info on upgrading.

Thanks for the tip. I did the upgrade, and the new version of Discover no longer has all the video on the home page. Discover is sort of usable, but still quite sluggish on this X41. I'll do software management with Synaptics.
