Kubuntu not using the latest kernel?

Today, I got a kernel update:
    Code:
    Start-Date: 2018-01-10 17:31:25
    Commandline: apt-get dist-upgrade
    Requested-By: chimak (1001)
    Install: linux-image-4.13.0-26-generic:amd64 (4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2, automatic), linux-headers-4.13.0-26:amd64 (4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2, automatic), linux-signed-image-4.13.0-26-generic:amd64 (4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2, automatic), linux-image-extra-4.13.0-26-generic:amd64 (4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2, automatic), linux-headers-4.13.0-26-generic:amd64 (4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2, automatic)
    Upgrade: linux-libc-dev:amd64 (4.4.0-108.131, 4.4.0-109.132), linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04:amd64 (4.10.0.42.44, 4.13.0.26.46), linux-signed-generic-hwe-16.04:amd64 (4.10.0.42.44, 4.13.0.26.46), linux-generic-hwe-16.04:amd64 (4.10.0.42.44, 4.13.0.26.46), linux-signed-image-generic-hwe-16.04:amd64 (4.10.0.42.44, 4.13.0.26.46), linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04:amd64 (4.10.0.42.44, 4.13.0.26.46)
    End-Date: 2018-01-10 17:33:13
    But, on rebooting, I'm seeing
    Code:
    $ uname -r
    4.10.0-42-generic
    $
and the same thing with inxi:
    Code:
    Kernel: 4.10.0-42-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
dpkg shows that 4.13 is installed:
    Code:

I ran sudo dpkg -C but that just returned the bash prompt.

My Kubuntu 18.04 in VBox is on 4.13.0-25-generic quite nicely.

Any thoughts please on why 16.04 isn't using 4.13?

      That did it. Thanks!

      $ uname -r

Great. Odd though, because usually update-grub runs automatically when you install a new kernel.

Chimak111, was that kernel in the normal sources of the repository for 16.04 or did you add a ppa?
Neon User Edition is based on the 16.04LTS but the 4.13 kernel isn’t in the repository

EDIT: My mistake. There are 4.13 kernels in the repository. Meltdown patches? Don't see anything saying they are.

            It's named for the HWE

Just checking on the 4.13 LTS kernels and noticed this:

              https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...s/+bug/1742573

Also, no date is associated with those kernels, presently in the repository, so I can't say if they were compiled to patch the Meltdown hole.

https://usn.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-3523-2/ confirms 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 is the meltdown fix.

I just received the intel microcode "fix" ( intel-microcode (3.20180108.0~ubuntu16.04.2) ) as part of my daily Lilnux Mint repository update. I didn't need to download directly from Intel's site.

It was written to /lib/firmware/intel-ucode which is correct according to what I've read.

                    Looks good so far...

When I tried them my 650M refused the patch, so I rolled back. I’ll just wait until the Neon devs roll out all the fixes into the repository for regular updating.

Neon devs don't do kernel or Nvidia driver updates.

                          Bad assumption.
Ok, that leaves Ubuntu devs, unless those applications experience miraculous uploads :\

                          So, I'll wait for them.

I'm not sure miracles are likely...

Kernel - 16.04 will only release meltdown/spectre fixes for 4.4 and 4.13 (and probably later) kernel versions. 4.08/4.10 HWE kernels will not, the fixes being in the updated HWE 4.13.

Nvidia - Likewise, the Nvidia 377 driver you mentioned is not likely to receive an update, as AFAIK it is no longer maintained upstream with updates, the long and short lived NVidia releases now having moved on to 384.x and 377.x respectively, both of which say they support a 650m.

Well then, the shields are already up and I'll load the nmap photon IP torpedoes in case of an attack.
