I would like to phone cheap from my computer

    Hello everybody,

I would like to be able to give calls to any kind of phone at the cheapest price and the best quality of sound transfer. I've been reading reviews and comparisons. Linphone seemed to be alright, but it is not so easy to install. Please what would you advise me?

I can't comment to the application, but it's available in a flatpack installation package. Can't get much easier than that.

Is was able to install it, create a linphone account, and test it in about 10 minutes.

Seems rather limited though, without a pay-service.

Thank you very much oshunluvr for your answer and the fact that you installed linphone and created specially an account. And thank you for telling me that you could do it within 10 min. I spent more than 5 hours on it without any success...
I've been installing it but I had then difficulties to create an account. I had so many fields to fill.
        I will try thru flatpack.
And of course I didn't expected to find something free.

Yeah, my experience was rather easy. Just follow the link to install the flatpak ppa and install flatpak, then install linhpone flatpak.

The only part that wasn't obvious is how to launch the app. In a terminal type:

          flatpak run com.belledonnecommunications.linphone &

Should be easy enough to add a kmenu item manually.

You can also use Google Hangouts (hangouts.google.com) and use a mic on your PC (headset w/ mic or dedicated microphone used with PC speakers). Requires a Google Voice number and account (voice.google.com). Incoming and outbound calling is free and there are easy ways to incorporate into an android phone to extend your Google Voice number to be a permanent number for home or mobile. Just another option for possible consideration.

I second this option, and was going to suggest it had it not already been. I ran a small business for a while and for cost reasons we used a Google Voice number instead of paying for a dedicated "hard" line.

Because thieves have ripped up a LOT of copper telephone lines the "hard lines" are rapidly disappearing. I believe that even telephone companies are using VOIP for their calls, once connection is made to the head end. Here in Lincoln, NE it is getting impossible to find an old fashion button phone, except at offices running a PBX.

LOL Fair point, but to clarify I should have said landline instead of hard line. I was referring to a phone that stays in a fixed location (i.e. a home phone) as compared to a Skype or Google Voice phone number.
